My Blog

I've been trying to be better about updating this. I also recently added the ability to leave comments for these blog entries so feel free to use that.

Sun, 5/4/2014 at 10:32 AM Colombia: First Night

The chaos that was waiting outside was to be expected. I don't know that I have yet been in an airport that has the traffic around the arrivals area really figured out. Something about too many cars and too many pedestrians. My friend's aunt had nicely brought her to the airport to meet me and drove us back into the city.

Medellin is a large city, population somewhere north of 2.3 million people, not including the surrounding areas. It is nestled in a valley formed by the surrounding mountains, so for the sake of the pilots the international airport is situated about 40 minutes from downtown Medellin. There is another airport within the city limits, but it serves mostly smaller planes. The drive to the city in the dark seemed like an endless series of climbs and drops, twisting roads and crazy drivers, which is probably because that's what it was...

Fri, 5/2/2014 at 4:57 PM Colombia: The Arrival

It's been over a week since I first arrived in Medellin, Colombia and yet I still feel like I am processing the experience. When I was invited to Europe for a two week tour, I decided that I had tried waiting for trips to "come to me" so if I wanted to go I would have to be a little more pro-active. After Europe was planned I was invited to Colombia. I figured that if I was going to try to break out of my comfort zone doing so a few weeks earlier wouldn't make much of a difference. Looking back I can't say for sure that I would make the same decision if I knew then what I know now. What I can say for sure is that I am so glad that I went, and very thankful for the experience.

Leaving on a 1:35 pm flight out of Newark set to arrive in Ft Lauderdale some high wind conditions caused a delay in our departure and subsequent arrival...

Sun, 1/5/2014 at 11:53 AM 2013 Reviewed

The first couple days of 2014 have been a disappointment, so it only seems appropriate that I take the time to reflect on the year that has just passed.

I'm not quite sure where to start. Looking back over the last few entries it seems like they will not be much help remembering what has happened. 2013 was supposed to be a big year for me. I had gone a long way towards reaching my weight loss goals, I was wearing new clothes, feeling better about myself and generally feeling more positive. I turned the big 3-0. I guess that doesn't matter so much in this area. In Lancaster, where I grew up, that's OLD. Most of those who stayed in the area were married or engaged in their 20's. It's hard to shake the feeling that I am falling behind a bit, but I've always sort of done things at my own pace and I have to remember that...

Tue, 9/3/2013 at 12:54 PM Where I've Been, What I've Been Doing

It has been nearly 8 month since last I wrote, and the time has come to reflect and share a bit of what has been happening. As far as work in the condo nearly nothing has been done. A few months ago my dryer stopped working correctly so I went ahead and upgraded both my washer and dryer. My laundry room is small and has the furnace and water heater in it so I took the opportunity of having two of the four large appliances removed to remove some of the nasty shelving, to spackle and paint the walls. The project is still unfinished, since I would ideally put up some cabinets to house my cleaning products and odds and ends that formerly adorned the shelves. The other projects that I described on here are still a possibility, but will have to wait until my budget recovers from that rather large and unexpected expense.

In love I have not had much more success. There was a brief moment in time when I was dating someone that I have been friends with for a long time...

Wed, 1/23/2013 at 12:46 PM A New Year, a New Me

Many people approach the new year and they resolve to make HUGE changes in their lives. Many of them for the better like losing weight, giving up smoking, or even just saving a little bit more money. It is great if you can resolve to do something and stick with it past the month of January, let alone past the first week of January. To me I think resolutions based around the new year are difficult. For example, I started my recent and fairly successful weight loss trip in June. It just so happened to be the time that I took a serious look at myself and decided that I had to do something to make me like what I saw. There was a little bit of extra motivation since I approached the end of my initial weight loss goal and the end of the year at the same time. I have said time and again to anyone that will listen, every little bit of motivation helps...
