My Blog

I've been trying to be better about updating this. I also recently added the ability to leave comments for these blog entries so feel free to use that.

A quarter century ago, or 25 years for those of us who are mathematically challenged, R.E.M. recorded a song proclaiming, "It's the end of the world as we know it and I feel fine." Today was a day that has been made famous by some Mayans who, in my own opinion, just got tired of counting. It is the end of the Mayan calendar, so maybe today is the last day on Earth, let's ask a Mayan... oh, wait.

Although I think I usually attempt to do a new year update, I guess the possible end of the world takes greater importance. So what's been going on?

This week saw me break my weight loss goal. I joined Life Time Fitness about 6 months ago, on June 4th. I was at the highest weight I have ever recorded on June 6th. Since that time I have been sticking to as much of my swimming and running routine as possible and this week I finally reached my goal of -61 lbs...

Wed, 12/12/2012 at 4:53 PM Master Bathroom: Sink and Vanity

Sinks are one of those features that seems to take a lot of thought to reach a final decision, but if chosen correctly should just kind of fade into the overall design of the room. This makes it difficult sometimes if you, like me, haven't quite settled on other details of the room. Add to that the fact that it seems like the number of sink designs has been increasing dramatically over the last few years. It at least used to be that you either had to have access to supply stores with larger inventories or have the patience to sit down and look through a manufacturer's book of available models. Now with everything being on the internet you can quickly find more than you ever really wanted to and should you accidentally lose one you liked, you may be lucky to find it again.

But speaking about the sink may be getting ahead of myself, as a successful sink selection is largely dependent on what the sink will be attached to...

Mon, 12/10/2012 at 4:05 PM Second Bedroom

The second bedroom in my condo is currently used as a den for me. Most days this works absolutely fine since I live by myself. Occasionally, however, the furniture gets in the way. When my parents come to visit I am usually nice and offer to let them stay in the master bedroom, then drag out an inflatable mattress and attempt to find room to inflate it. It is not that the room is particularly tiny, though it is on the small side, but rather that the furniture within the room takes up so much space.

I used to live in an apartment with a very long front room, and a secondary bedroom with an odd bump out. Of course this has little to do with my current place or my current story except for the fact that the furniture I have now, was purchased to fit those two spaces. This means that the love seat is rather oversized width-wise and the desk is a little oversized, well, everywhere...

Fri, 12/7/2012 at 4:18 PM Master Bathroom: Smart(er) Glass

While visiting my parents in Lancaster a few months ago I decided to stop by the mall and pick up a few pairs of shorts (which no longer fit). I stopped in Aeropostale because they were having a decent sale. Anyway, when I went to try on the shorts I was confused as to where the dressing rooms were. I saw a row of glass doors along one wall that would usually be the dressing rooms, but these doors were clear. I am aware that the United States is a little more conservative when it comes to nudity and the human body, and I am also aware that Lancaster in particular tends to be a little on the conservative side. It seemed unlikely, therefor, that they really intended for customers to try on clothing in plain sight. After checking with a salesperson she opened up one of the doors for me and upon stepping in the glass immediately changed to a frosted appearance...

Thu, 12/6/2012 at 4:10 PM Losing Weight

At the end of this past May I had decided that enough was enough. I was at my all time high weight of 271 pounds and not happy with myself at all. I had done a trial with a friend at his gym but hadn't felt like I got into enough of a rhythm to see any changes. So, in early June I joined the gym and signed up for an adult swim group that they offer. The first day back in the pool was incredibly difficult. The second day I got to the gym with a bunch of extra time so I ran on the treadmill for an hour before going to swim. My run (probably more like a walk) did not get me very far and the swim was not much easier. The gym I joined is very expensive so I figured if I am going to pay for it I better use it. Besides, the gym seems to have a number of attractive women who either work there or are members. I won't say that any factor is more important than any other, but I will take any little bit of motivation that I can get...
